This program is designed to provide you with knowledge and skills necessary for entry-level employment as a medical assistant in a medical office or clinic, with skills in office, administrative, and clinical areas. After completing the Medical Assisting program, graduates may sit for the American Association of Medical Assistants certification. The graduate may function as a skillful administrative, clinical and general office assistant.

Course work includes administrative procedures, practice finances, principles of clinical fundamentals, providing diagnostic procedures, patient care, and medication administration within state guidelines. The Health Information Technician is projected to be one of the fastest growing occupations in the US. These technicians manage medical records of patients which include laboratory tests and x-rays, physician’s orders, diagnoses and treatment plans. A Medical Lab Technician performs tests and laboratory procedures used in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease. They may examine and analyze body fluids, and cells. They look for bacteria, parasites, and other microorganisms; analyze the chemical content of fluids; match blood for transfusions; and test for drug levels in the blood that show how a patient is responding to treatment. The test results will enable Physicians to detect, diagnose, and treat disease. The Medical Lab Technician may use such lab equipment as microscopes, cell counters, and automated and computerized equipment capable of performing a number of tests simultaneously.

Employment of clinical laboratory workers is expected to grow 14% between 2006 and 2016, faster than the average for all occupations during the same period. Pharmacy Technicians help licensed Pharmacists provide medication and other health care products to patients. Technicians usually perform the routine tasks to help prepare prescribed medication, such as retrieving, counting, pouring, weighing, measuring, mixing and labeling of the prescriptions. They will also help with administrative duties, such as answering phones, stocking shelves, and operating cash registers in retail settings. Depending on state rules and regulations, and the type of pharmacy they are employed at, duties may vary. Technicians will also refer any questions regarding prescriptions, drug information, and health matters to the Pharmacist. Also, Pharmacy Technicians perform duties such as intravenous admixture and extemporaneous in institutional settings, such as hospitals and nursing home facilitators.

Pharmacy Technicians held about 285,000 jobs in 2006. Retail Pharmacies accounted for about 71% of Pharmacy Technician jobs; 18% of jobs were in hospitals, and the remaining were employed in mail-order and internet pharmacies, physician offices, pharmaceutical wholesalers and the Federal Government.*Source-U.S. Department of Labor—January 2008. Tri-State’s Respiratory Therapy program is designed to give the student the skills for an entry level position as a Respiratory Therapy Technician or a Respiratory Therapist. Respiratory Therapists evaluate, treat, and care for patients with breathing or other cardiopulmonary disorders. Working under the direction of a Physician, respiratory therapists assume primary responsibility for all respiratory care therapeutic treatments and diagnostic procedures, including the supervision of respiratory therapy technicians. Tri-State’s Radiologic Technologist program is designed to give the student the skills for an entry level position as a Radiologic Technologist (also known as an X-Ray Technician). Radiologic Technologists take x-rays and administer nonradioactive materials into patients’ bloodstreams for diagnostic purposes. After positioning the patient, they produce x-ray films (called radiographs) of parts of the human body for use in diagnosing medical problems. They prepare the patient by explaining the procedure, removing jewelry and other items that block x-rays, positioning the patient and imaging equipment into the optimal position to get the best image, and placing radiation protection devices to limit the patient’s exposure. Tri-State Radiologic Technologist students will also produce and analyze optical radiological images and will have limited studies in computer tomography imaging.  Back to Top
